  1. Well done. If it was me, I think I’d be somewhere around 3 words. I love/hate writing the book reviews that I do for Slashdot. I love writing my opinions (who knew?), but I hate having to try and hit their recommended 1000 word minimum for reviews.

Arrrgh. It brings back horrible images of school and having to write minimum word count essays. Of course, it didn’t help that both my parents qualify for the advanced grammar police and used to inspect my output regularly. They also used to slash out stuff when they felt that I was waffling. Ever lost a whole paragraph ’cause someone else thought it was unnecessary? Arrrgh. I blame them for my terrible terseness.

  2. Simon: You’re terse? You communicate clearly and concisely, which is not the same as terse – unless you’re talking about your feeling with your beloved, when concise is probably not what she’s after…

I only get involved with my children’s schoolwork in a consultant capacity. The actual work – which includes proof-reading their own stuff – is their own. Thus I rarely blue-pencil anything, and I’ve certainly yet to excise an entire paragraph – former English major and teacher though I am! So, quite a different approach to that of your parents.

And yet my son is definitely terse. Go figure.
