It’s Not All Mary Poppins

Harry Potter got there First…

…but it appears that an invisibility cloak might not be too far in the future!

Sir John Pendry published an article in yesterday’s edition of Science, describing his team’s research. Just as a pencil placed in a streambed only causes the water to flow smoothly around it, he says, an object ensheathed in special “metamaterials” could cause light to flow smoothly, hiding whatever it is from view.

Science or magic? I’d say, “Yes”.

  1. Can you imagine?

Oh I’d buy me one of these….

but then I’m not so sure I’d wanna know what I found out when I was sneakin’ around behind it.

    Pretty interesting.

  2. very cool, but I’m glad it’s just in theory so far – I think the implications of that are really scary. Like so many things that might be invented and intended for fun, this has totally creepy and dangerous applications. (Am I thinking too much for Sunday morning?!)

  3. Cool, and yet scary. Our leaders have a difficult enough time “trusting” what is visible. Imagine how paranoid they’ll be if someone other than their own government has invisibility potential.

Of course children will LOVE the idea! Me too!

  4. You listened to the current on Friday AM, right?

I loved that Paul Martin gag, too.

  5. Kimmyk: There’s a saying: “Eaves-droppers never hear good of themselves”. It’s probably true…

Kittenpie: The article said “within five years”, which may be tremendously optimistic, I don’t know. You’re not thinking too deeply, because another thing I came across said that it’s being considered for “military applications”. Now if that doesn’t send chills, I don’t know what would!

MamacitaTina: Which is scarier: a government with this capability, or a two-year-old? Hmmm…

Mo-wo: The Current? That’s that show that comes on in the mornings, right? As in, not at nap-time? From time to time on rainy stay-home mornings I catch snippets of it, but the bits I bag over the bedlam are rarely coherent and even less trustworthy… No, I found it in the Ottawa Citizen.
