It’s Not All Mary Poppins

I’m not so happy today…

My computer is on its way out. The monitor goes mental after a few minutes’ use. Thanks to my computer-savvy son, I know why this is happening, but, sadly, there’s not much that can be done about it. Well, there is, if I wanted to spend half what the thing is worth getting it fixed.

Which I don’t.

(Even as I type, the top half of my screen is waving madly to and fro. I’m getting motion sick here…) I will do my best, but blogging has suddenly become much, much less accessible. It could be a while before it is. Damn.

What I want is a new laptop. What I don’t have is the money for one.

…Sigh…

  2. Can you plug in an external monitor? Not as convenient to be sure, but worth a try if you have one lying around from a previous desktop. That’s what we ended up doing with the keyboard on our laptop after the cat spilled tea on it, because although ours is aged, we couldn’t really see a way to afford a new one, either.

  3. That does suck. It’s so frustrating when something doesn’t work.

I’d love to have a laptop, too! But, alas, I don’t have the money either.

  4. Not sure what type of laptop you have but I was surprised to find how cheap the parts for mine are. My toddler flicked a few keys off and I can’t get them back correctly. Turns out you can get a new keyboard for $20 (incl shipping) on ebay if you hunt.

Screen replacement seems a bit more involved but nothing too difficult for someone like your son. e.g. look at http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_4.htm

Laptop repairs seem to be v v pricey if you take it somewhere but not so bad if you don’t pay labor and are willing to void the warranty.

  5. Oh, poor Mary! I hope your computer issues get resolved really soon!

Oh, and I have to laugh at your label for this post: the dark side. Is it you that is on the dark side or your computer? 🙂

  6. Would you be interested in a GC surplus monitor?

  7. Bummer. I know exactly what you mean, been there, done that.

Have you looked on Freecycle? Laptops come up every now and then – as long as you don’t want top of the range/gaming graphics you can pick them up for nothing:-)

Mine was a freebie – it runs Windows XP (I think), gets me onto the internet wireless like and lets me check email – what more do i need?

  8. Sorry to hear of your troubles. We are experiencing some similar issues here and it just sucks. Here’s to hoping the new laptop fairy will drop one off for free.

  10. Seriously.. no dough? I find that used ibooks are going for pretty good prices these days.. I would offer you MAC support if that’s a barrier.

  13. Your laptop is ON ITS WAY. Hang in there folks – Mary will be back up and running (thanks to her wonderful daughter, aka me) in just a few short days.

  14. Yay Haley! You can be my new best friend if you’d like! (Of course having a BF who is a thirty-something with a 1.5 year old may not be all that appealing to you at this point in your life, but that’s all I can offer…)
