It’s Not All Mary Poppins

An unintentional social experiment

“Oh, look at all the babies!”
Are they all yours?”
“Wow! That must keep you busy!”
“Oh, good god.”
“YOU are one brave woman!”
“Are they all yours?”

Just another outing with my mega-stroller filled with tots. I’ve talked about that before, of course. We simply never slip under the radar, much as I might like that some days. Recently, however, there’s been a change in peoples’ responses to us. It’s not because of those hats, though they certainly garner their fair share of attention. It’s not because I have two newbies, and thus the average age is younger than usual.

“Oh, look at all the babies! Isn’t that cu– OH! Oh, looook. Isn’t that adorable?”
“Wow! That must keep you — oh, my lord. That’s beyond cute!”
“YOU are one brav — Awwwwww… sooooo sweet. ”

And what’s the difference? It’s still a stroller filled with small children. They’re just as cute as they’ve ever been.

They still wear cute hats. They still stare solemnly, or beam beguilingly, depending on their personalities.

Nope, it’s not the kids.

the puuuupppyyyyy

I think I have sufficient data that I can safely declare that, for the bulk of the population, ONE puppy outweighs the cute factor of FOUR babies/toddlers. Any day.

“Look at the cute babi — OH, my word! Look at the puupppyyyy!

  1. Awww.. I’d totally go for the puppy too!

She’s grown some since these pictures were taken, but she’s still some cute!

  4. Not only is it a puppy, it’s a puppy in a basket…awwwwwwwwwwwwww! πŸ™‚

Yes, I think that has a lot to do with the reactions. She even has her own little blanket in there…

  5. AW! He’s got a little spot! For when his wee tiny legs get all tired!

Now that really IS cute! πŸ™‚

Exactly! Those pictures are a couple of months old, so she doesn’t ride in there that often any more, but for a while it really was a useful way to get places when her wee tiny legs got all tired.

  6. The puppy is cute. The kids are cute. But I first noticed the jackets and long pants. Is it that cool up north? The heat index here is 112f (44C?).

No, those pictures were taken back in April or May. Today it peaked out (with humidex) at 46C. Which is BLOODY hot! And me with no AC. (Well, a couple of window units in bedrooms, but nothing on the main level.) Unbelievably hot. The kids spent most of the day wearing nothing but diapers.

  7. soooo cute! you can tell that you live in canada and not in this infernal hot box down here in maryland by the children’s clothing! πŸ™‚

You know, it’s a joke up here that we get Americans crossing the border in July with skis on top of their car, expecting snow… πŸ˜€ As I said to Bethany, it’s really STINKING hot up here. We’re in the midst of one heckuva heat wave at the moment. But I admit: I tricked you by being way disorganized and not using the pictures I took two or three months ago until just now. Back in April/early May, when I took those pictures, they dressed like that. Today they spent the day 3/4 nekkid.

  8. Your puppy DOES look like a Disney character in flesh form.

Aw, thanks! Back then (when the pictures were taken in April/May) more so. Now she’s gone all lean and leggy… but still pretty damned cute!
