It’s Not All Mary Poppins

Baby Naming #3… and 4

… at last.

So. I have two new babies, who remain un-named. So far I’ve been resorting to “Old New Baby” and “New New Baby”. A tad cumbersome.

Time to Name that Child!

And — yay, me! — I’ve come up with one for Old New Baby!!! She’s fourteen or fifteen months old. She is calm, and, so far, calmly cheerful. In keeping with her age, she’s a watcher. She is also the perfect Gerber baby — round cheeks, teeny rosebud mouth, round blue eyes, dusting of blondish hair. She blows kisses with a “MAH!” sound. She is, in short, too flipping adorable for words.

In the way of my mind, I thought “Gerber baby… gerbera daisy… let’s call her Daisy!!!” It would suit, too, but it would be too confusing, what with the puppy already having that name. Well, damn. But how about another flower name?

“Rose”? Nah. Too elegant. She’s not elegant. Cute, but not elegant. We’ve already had a “Lily”. “Violet”? Mmmm, no. She’s not shy, she’s not delicate. “Iris”, for me, is reminiscent of a rich, but disapproving old woman, so, no.

How about Poppy? She’s not vibrant (yet; it may come), but for me “Poppy” is a round and happy name. Cute, not elegant.

So. Old New Baby is Poppy.

Now for New New Baby. And me? I’m tapped out on baby names. I need suggestions for names for New New Baby.

He’s a boy. Blond, hearty, snuggly, friendly, with a ginormous beaming smile. I haven’t had enough time to take any meaningful measure of his personality. But so far, his defining traits are:

– he’s a tank. The boy is SOLID.
– blond. Really, really blond, with the skin and eyes to match
– cuddly. He likes to be held. A lot. I assume this will recede as he becomes more comfy at my home, but he does love his snuggles.
– he loves singing. Not that he sings, but it mesmerizes him.
– though he’s still getting used to us, I get the impression that his default setting is “amiable”. He just has that look.

Any suggestions?

  2. Daniel. I have a Daniel that is solid as a tank, blond, and loves to snuggle. So I vote Daniel.

  3. I like Thor. Blond, strong… I suppose it might be a bad omen that will encourage him to whap people with a hammer when he gets older, but I’m also a big fan of the one-syllable names.

  4. I was also going with something Scandinavian sounding…Sven?

  6. Between the blondness and the amiability, he sounds to me like a Baldur – the god of beauty in Norse mythology. Don’t know if you want to go with something that esoteric, but that’s what came to me šŸ™‚

  7. Peter-rock (since he’s solid)

    Thorsen-Thor’s son

    Torstein- Thor’s stone

  11. Oh, I like the Baldur suggestion! To me, Thor’s propensity to whack frost-giants with his hammer doesn’t fit your description so much. Baldur seems just right, as long as there’s no Loki and no mistletoe lurking in your house.

YOU obviously know your Norse mythology far better than me. I recognize the names, I know about Thor and the frost-giants, and that Loki is a trickster god, but mistletoe? And who’s Baldur, exactly? Ummmmm…

  13. In the one syllable theme, how about Ty or Luke (largely because I once knew some solid, very blonde boys with those names)?

  16. He sounds a lot like my 1yo, Evan, except for the tank part. Evan is a petite little guy. My husband wanted the name “Ivan” instead of “Evan” and “Ivan” sounds like a good name for a solid kid, so I’m saying “Ivan”.

  17. I didn’t think I was going to comment at all, believing all the suggestions to be very good so far. But I suppose a nugget formed in my brain and I got a sudden urge of inspiration. With the idea that he is a very solid sort, loves to be held and enjoys the sounds of singing…I was thinking Brock. Not sure why exactly…but that’s my suggestion.

  18. Oh, I forgot to add that I think Poppy is a lovely choice. It’s pretty and unusual, I’ve always liked that name…usually short for Penelope if memory serves.

  19. Ruby is my suggestion!

  20. I did think of some Scandanavian names at first, but then I thought more about amiable names and came up with Teddy. I don’t know if that’s a person name in Canada but I know a couple of Teddys here in the UK. I love Poppy! That was my nickname as a child (but we stopped using it after I went to school and met a real Poppy who was awful – such a shame how names can be spoilt by associations).

  21. Have you had a “Buddy” yet? Amiable just sounds like “Buddy” to me. Ha-ha! I just noticed someone else suggested “Buddy!”

If you’ve already had a Buddy, there’s always Lars or Otto. No idea what they may mean, or what they may mean to you.

  22. Henry–his description sounds like our cheery Henry. Fun-loving, mirthful little blondie that he is….

  23. Ted. Short for Teddy. very all-american and solid… (Can you be “all-american” and live in Canada? Perhaps I haven’t thought this through…)
