It’s Not All Mary Poppins

At least they don’t shed

Grace has a new dog! Not a puppy, but a large, fluffy, golden-retriever mix. He’s three years old, and absolutely gorgeous. Got the wide, friendly golden face, and the easy-going disposition. They’ve had him a week.

Two days after his arrival in their home, this game started happening. That green mesh ball is one of Daisy’s dog toys. Tied to it is one of the laces from our lacing cards. But really? It is not a ball and a lace! Silly, silly people.

It is a DOG on a LEASH. Of course.

It follows her everywhere, it comes when it’s called. (A quick jerk on the lace leash ensures prompt arrival.) And it has an EVEN MORE IMPORTANT doggie feature!

Let’s look more closely. See, inside the ball? See that slip of paper? That slip of paper which Grace has carefully coloured, then torn to the right size? That slip of paper that fits inside the ball, but will sometimes, particularly when the doggie is running, it will sometimes fall out?

That is not a slip of paper! Silly, silly people!

That is POO. Because when you take them for walks, doggies POO!!! Really!

And then, being the responsible dog-mommy that she is, Grace picks up the poo. With another piece of paper that she has carefully folded, to be the “poop bag”.

This game is such fun! Mary laughs and laughs and laughs every time Grace plays it. Grace, and now Jazz, who, like any self-respecting toddler, will play any game that gets an adult’s so-rapt and joyous attention.

They make poo so they can pick it up. Hee.

Now I’m thinking. We’re out of playdough. Perhaps the next batch I cook up should be … brown?

  1. Aside from the hilarity factor – which is high – I am really, really impressed by the level of imagination and inventiveness necessary to come up with this game.

Maybe she should come walk my dog? He’s a 95lb Labrador and produces more than enough poo to satisfy all toddler pick-up requirements. 😉

I’m impressed, too. Grace is an interesting study. This is evidence to support the theory that she’s a bit of a space cadet not because she’s not bright, but because of the very opposite: there’s a lot going on in that wee head, and it’s more interesting, mostly, than what’s going on around her. I have other theories about Grace, but I’m loving the aspects of her I see in this play!

I’m sure she’d be delighted to walk your dog. However, she’s a 30-pound child… Unless he’s exceedingly mellow, even in the face of squirrels and bunnies, I foresee disaster.

  2. How delightful! And how clever to figure out that game. Now if I could only figure out if D is a space cadet or just working on the secrets of the universe…

I have to think it’s just a matter of wait and see. We can speculate till the cows come home, but we won’t know for sure until they’re done and grown!

  3. I love the Graces of the world. We had one we referred to as Heather the Vague. I just hope that when she moves into the formal education system they don’t force the imagination out of her. Around here if you can’t test it it doesn’t count.

Grace the Vague. I love it, and it fits. Hee. As for testing, tests in the primary grades are more open-ended, and they become increasingly formalized and standardized as the children get older. They’re all tested for giftedness in third grade, there’s a standardized math test in grade nine, and a literacy test in grade ten, but those are the only standardized tests our kids get. Parents can opt their kids out of the gifted test, but passing the other two is a requirement of high school graduation.

All that to say, if the imagination gets pounded out of her in grade school, it will be through the pressure to conformity provided by the other children as much as the system. Kids can be pretty hard on gentle, imaginative peers.

  5. Oh, oh, oh, I have MISSED you! What with surgery chaos and then sudden (VERY sudden!) baby girl adoption, my life got sucked up and away. But today — oh, today I found my old bookmarks. And I “rediscovered” you. And I am so very, very happy. (And baby girl is now 18 months and simply fabulous!)

Welcome back! Wow, you’ve had an eventful past few months! Congratulations on the new baby! Are you blogging about it anywhere??
